I don't feel like I'm risking anything by saying Modern Family was one of the best new sitcoms of the season. In fact, it's really only a contest between two new comedies, this and Community. But where Community found it's humor in pop culture references, cynicism and love triangles, Modern Family found their laughs in loveable characters, a devoted family and oceans of heart. They proved that you don't necessarily have to be dysfunctional to be a family comedy.
Perhaps one of the most dysfunctional families in the history of television were the Bundys on Married with Children. So it's a bit ironic that Ed O'Neill has made a fantastic return to the sitcom world playing the caring and committed patriarch to this mismatched bunch. Though the series started Jay Pritchett off as a prickly curmudgeon, unsure of how to relate to his gay son,Mitch, or Mitch's life partner, Modern Family quickly turned Jay into a loveable teddy bear ready to do anything for his family, including his wife Gloria. This made for a much more relatable and enjoyable character. A meaner Jay would not have been as funny after accidentally killing his stepson's turtle or knocking butts with his son's partner. As the most recognizable actor in the series, one might suspect O'Neil's character Jay would be the center and pseudo-lead of the show, but Modern Family is truly an ensemble production. |

Every now and then I wonder if the writers of Modern Family were invisible guests at my family dinner table. Take last night's 'Family Portrait' : Claire's obsession with the flawed step, the stress of taking a family picture, and even Mitchell's reaction to a pigeon trapped indoors (see: my sister, a Lord & Taylor dressing room, last winter) were all scarily reminiscent of my own family. After two great Hawaii-centric episodes, Modern Family went back to basics for its season finale. The simple plots - a family picture, a basketball game, a school project - could have felt boring as there were no big-name guest stars or scenic backdrops, but each of the characters' personal quirks made them endlessly entertaining (Phil's paranoia, Claire's obsessiveness, Mitchell's fear of animals, and Cameron's newly acquired Divadom). They're what make family family, and what makes this show so brilliant. Here are the 10 best lines: To Read More Click Here.

If playing Phil Dunphy is like being on vacation, then Ty Burrell doesn't want to leave. "It's nice to be on vacation, right?" the Modern Family star tells TVGuide.com. "But that's what being Phil is - a vacation from my mind." It was a holiday Burrell didn't know he needed until the part of the dopey, well-intentioned suburban dad came his way. The role was written with Burrell in mind by series creators Steve Levitan and Chris Lloyd, who previously worked with Burrell on the short-lived Back to You. "First, I was like, 'Cool! This is for me?' Then it was like, 'Wait, what are you trying to say?'" he says, laughing. "But I realized I was getting a break from myself. My brain is full of neuroses and I think about everything, but Phil's brain is the complete opposite. It's like a golden meadow - just peaceful, simple and happy. ... It's so fun and refreshing to play him. He's like a child exploring the world for the first time." To Read More Click Here.

Fortunately for Modern Family fans, the Pritchett-Dunphy clan made it
out of LAX all the way to "Hawaii," this week's new episode. And
although the family may have been on vacation, it's clear the writers
were hard at work--creating one of the season's best half-hours. As
the group readies for Jay's birthday celebration, we learn several
crucial pieces of information. Jay's father died at the same age his son
is about to reach. Cameron doesn't really like to go on "adventures"
when on vacation--he'd rather relax by the pool, much to uptight
Mitchell's dismay. And most important, we learn that years ago, Claire
and Phil were supposed to go to Hawaii on their honeymoon. Unfortunately,
Claire's unexpected pregnancy with Haley derailed both a formal wedding
and the trip. Phil spends the entire show trying to have that honeymoon
he and his wife never had, which means that Claire must give her kids
some freedom from her constant surveillance. Which leads us to ... To
