One of the biggest success stories of the TV season is "Modern Family," ABC's rejuvenation of the family sitcom, albeit a slightly twisted take.

Most actors in the show's ensemble are veterans of other series, which run the gamut from iconic to swiftly canceled. For example, "Modern Family" patriarch Ed O'Neill will forever be beloved as "Married ... With Children" dad Al Bundy, while his onscreen son Jesse Tyler Ferguson previously starred on the short-lived sitcom "The Class," and TV daughter Julie Bowen has a trio of solid series ("Lost," "Boston Legal," and "Ed") under her belt. Ty Burrell, playing Bowen's clueless husband, was a regular on two previous series, as was Sofia Vergara, who plays O'Neill's trophy wife.

Steve Levitan’s Home Life Is Fodder for ‘Modern Family’ E-mail
Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:33

“All of our stories come from real life,” Steven Levitan, co-creator and executive producer of ABC’s “Modern Family,” told 1,200 fans at a recent Paley Center for Media event in Beverly Hills.  Asking his wife, Krista, to stand, he told the PaleyFest group that she really did smash his expensive television remote control into a thousand pieces and left it by their front door for him to find. He then introduced their son, Griffin, whom he was obliged to shoot with a BB gun after Griffin shot his cousin; and daughter, Hannah, whose video chat with her friends caught him wearing nothing but his underwear.

All raw material for a guy hailed as a savior of the half-hour television comedy for the über-hit he created with longtime collaborator Christopher Lloyd.

A FAMILY IS LIKE A SPORTS TEAM SOME MEMBERS ARE FIRST-STRINGERS AND OTHERS GET BENCHED, ON ABC'S "MODERN FAMILY".

"Benched" - When Luke and Manny's hot-tempered basketball coach quits in the middle of a game, Jay and Phil both jockey to fill the position.
